BandiZip is an excellent and free file archive creation and extraction software tool. It supports all the most widely used archive formats, including the usual suspects (ZIP, RAR, 7Z, ARJ, TAR, 001, etc.) and others not-so-known formats (such as EGG, BH, LZH, ALZ or PMA, together with a dozen of UNIX-based archives). It can also extract the files packed in ISO, IMG, UDF, and WIM image files.
When launched for the first time, the program requires you to configure various categories of settings, including the extraction and compression settings. On a lighter note, you will also be asked to define which archive types you want to associate to the program and which of the program’s functions you want to add to the context menu. The extraction and compression settings are by far the more interesting ones. With the novice and non-expert user in mind, the program has checked for you those settings considered as essential for a minimum level of performance, which is something to be grateful for.
Once you have gone through all the settings, BandiZip offers you a clean and well-structured interface for you to create new archives and to extract existing ones. Not all archive formats are supported both ways though – ZIP, ZIPX, TAR, TGZ, 7Z, and EXE can be packed and unpacked using this tool, while all the other formats supported can only be unpacked. Before unpacking an existing archive or image file, the program gives you the possibility of checking its integrity – its built-in Archive Test utility will scan the archive looking for errors that might prevent BandiZip from unpacking it. When packing files into a new archive, you are given the possibility of opening the Compression settings again to make all the necessary changes, this time without going through all the initial configuration process.
BandiZip’s attractive and intuitive interface, the extensive list of archive and image file formats supported, and its high level of flexibility and customizability, make this tool a serious competitor to better known mainstream tools (say, WinZip and WinRAR). If you add cost to the equation, this application becomes harder to beat.
